General Essential Functions
- Endoscopy Nurse provides nursing care to patients in the Endoscopy Unit in terms of individual needs, according to physician’s orders and in conformity with recognized nursing practice and established policies and procedures.
- Assesses and evaluates patient needs to provide supportive care before, during and after procedures.
- May directly assists physicians with procedures
- Handling and maintaining accurate records of medications used and wasted during a procedure as well as accurate handling and labeling of specimens.
- Assures equipment is in proper working order.
- Initiates emergency measures as needed. Assists with maintenance of crash cart.
- Assures patient has appropriate transportation post procedure.
- Maintains standard to provide safe, clean and orderly environment, including cleaning, disinfection and daily maintenance of endoscopy equipment.
- Ascertains patient understanding of procedure and witnesses consent form prior to sedation and initiates IV’s for patient sedation prior to the procedures.
- Administers medications in accordance with physician’s orders.
- Participates in patient teaching pre and post procedure.
- Maintains accurate and complete endoscopy records, documenting all nursing assessments, interventions and patient response.
- Schedules patients for follow-up office visits, and arranges radiology appointments and gives instructions for prep as ordered and documents on appropriate forms.
- Participates in QI activities of the endoscopy unit and assists with routine and on-going patient chart audits for both nursing and physician completion.
- Helps provide a safe environment for the patient to prevent potential injury.
- Maintains high standards of confidentiality with all employee information/records.
Qualifications
- Registered nurse.
- Membership in local, state and national societies is encouraged.
- Maintains current Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification and ACLS.
- Solid nursing background, concentration or willingness to obtain advanced knowledge in GI specialty.

- The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
- This position requires the ability to have sufficient strength to move carts, able to assist post sedation patient with ambulation
